Alba's and Margita's Great Test of Chais, Pt. 14: Urban Café

Once upon a time, there were people rushing through the streets near Bílá labuť, not really able to find a place which would welcome their spring-seeking hearts and coffee-searching souls.

Then a storm came upon the streets of Prague, winds were whirling through alleys, rain was falling onto roofs of different colors. During the loudest and strongest thunderstorm in years, lightning struck one special spot. In a few days, a little monstera baby was growing out of the soil still glowing with violet electricity. In a few weeks, Urban Café was standing there and when you look closely, you can still see a violet glow in it even from a distance...

... OK, this is indeed an unauthorized story of how Urban Café came to exist and open its doors, but you get what I'm trying to say.

We could not ignore the glow and the call for a chai!

ALBA

The Foam: A creamy, soft, thick and tasty layer of foam that lasted almost until the last drops of the chai. This is probably my favorite foam so far, there was something about its texture that made it really enjoyable. 8/10

The Chai: Served in a pretty big cup the first sip of this chai was surprisingly tasty. The rest of the chai wasn't as explosive, but it was still good and balanced. 7/10

The Overall Experience: This time we met in an unusual timeframe for us, Saturday morning! But Urban Café's opening times made it impossible for us to go there during the week and I must say the visit was worth leaving the comfort of my bed. :) Close to Florenc, this little café is a plant paradise! I must admit I was quite jealous to see how many beautifully looking, perfectly alive and taken care of plants they had, given how I really struggle to keep alive plants that are technically indestructible. :D

We went into this café in February on one of the coldest days of this winter, so the weather really called for a Chaiturday (couldn't help it, hehe). Besides the chai, I also had a delicious carrot cake, while having a lovely morning and secretly thinking about taking some plants home. :D 9/10

MARGITA

The Foam: Silky and smooth microfoam where the sweetness and spiciness is already more than noticeable. I've never thought that I'd use this word in one of my articles, but here it is and I honestly cannot find a better way to express myself - the foam was yummy! 8.5/10

The Chai: I'm not exaggerating when I say this chai was a symphony of tastes. There was a lovely, tasty balance between the milky, sweet and spicy part of my hot drink. The portion was on the bigger side and in case of thirst for something neutral, you could pour yourself a glass of self-serve water. 8.5/10

The Overall Experience: During grey winter days, one can often feel a lack of freshness, a longing for the green of nature. In Urban Café, plants are all over the place and you can absorb some oxygen they create in this beautiful space with vaulted ceilings.

I fell in love with the interior which I can perfectly imagine as my future bohemian bedroom. It's very spacious and airy, simple and not overdecorated. There are three main checkpoints in this café - the XXL-mirror which gives the place the nice illusion of additional space, the bar where you order your drinks and pick your cake and the wall covered with plants and ultraviolet lighting. When I saw the healthy, happy plants under the violet light I had to suppress the urge to put myself under those magical lamps that might have helped me get rid of my zombie last-days-of-winter-self. But you know me, I'd rather focus on testing stuff for you than trying to reach the absurd beauty-standards of Prague's café-plants!

I'd call this coffee place the complete opposite of Vnitroblock, the place we wrote about in our previous chai test. It doesn't really have a busy vibe, but it's for the better, loudness and much hustle wouldn't really suit it. It's a café which is really nice for a nice weekend get-together or even for some nice me-time with a cup of a hot drink of your choice and a print of Standart magazine.

I also tried the coffee before we headed out for our walk in sunny yet freezing Prague and it was very good as well. The staff was really kind and the time we spent there flew by fast. I also had the sudden urge to populate my flat with even more plants... Very subtle, Urban Café, very subtle! 8.5/10

Price of the chai: 65 CZK / 2.55 EUR
