Alba's and Margita's Great Test of Chais, Pt. 10: Marthy's Kitchen

Today we will take you to a place which me and Alba have been passing by quite often during our winter-walks in Vinohrady. Marthy's Kitchen is not exactly blending in into the row of buildings, but it's rather a shiny spot visible even from a distance.

Maybe you've seen it tagged in some instagram-photos - their breakfasts are photogenic even when they consist of boring stuff like eggs, plain bread and sausages. And the other dishes served here are lovely to look at as well.

And now let's take a look at something drinkable. The chai!

ALBA

The Foam: Quite a thick layer of foam with no decoration and not very tasty or spicy. 6/10

The Chai: HUGE (like, seriously gigantic) cup of chai served in a nice glass, buuuuut not really meeting my temperature standards. Flavor-wise I missed more spices and found it a bit too milky, but it could have been a 6.5 if it would have been warmer. In such a big cup, the chai was pretty coldish towards the end. 6/10

The Overall Experience: This time my beloved Vinohrady was, again, our destination. Marthy's Kitchen is a very small and cute place right at Francouzská street, with a very good and varied selection of both sweet and salty food that really made me want to go there for breakfast soon :D With quiet background music it's easy to lose track of time over a cup of chai or a glass of wine (or both) on a still-quite-dark January evening. 8/10

MARGITA

The Foam: The taste of milk or a hint of milkiness is one of my favorites. Milk-infused soap, milk-moustaches, milk-milk... This is why I was pleased to see a thick, white and smooth layer of solid milk-foam on the top of the chai. There was a splash of chai-spices or cinnamon, I'm not sure which one as the spices were quite tough to distinguish. Maybe some own secret mix of spices? 8/10

The Chai: This portion was huge! The chai was beautiful, served in a tall glass, it made me feel like I was Belle from Beauty and The Best, she must have drank such beautiful beverages (while being locked in her luxurious prison in Hotel Beast). Every moment I was expecting the glasses and mugs to come alive and start singing. Luckily, I didn't have to join any singing kitchen equipment and Alba's ears (and our friendship) was spared of the dreadful experience of me singing.

There was a hint of a mysterious, unknown and formerly not experienced taste in the chai, very subtle, yet noticeable. Some moments I thought it was coconut, some moments I thought it was bourbon vanilla. This chai reminded me more of a cocoa than a "real" chai, which is supposed to be spicy, strong. Taste-wise it was a bit too weak and the most appropriate comparison I can draw here is that it tasted like a cinnamon bun (or this little cinnamon IKEA-spiral) with milk. 6.5/10

The Overall Experience: This café claims to have a French charm, but I have to admit for some reason it reminds me of American diners of the 50s. The chairs, the pastel-minty touch, even the font in which the name of the place is written.

The interior is cozy and stylish, maybe for some people the elements and their combination might be a bit too much already. There are pillows on the window sill, coat-hangers of just the most original shape and cute cupcakes smiling at you from the fridge. The waitresses here are lovely! If I'd be an eleven-year-old boy having his first crush on an "older" woman, I would definitely fall for the beautiful waitresses of this place.

Marthy's Kitchen might be (or might have been as the life-span of social-media coolness of these places is not known for its longevity) massively photogenic and cute in every detail. The most significant impression I had was the feeling of concentrated coziness and this welcoming warmth, not related to the room temperature but rather to the soul of this place.

Indeed a great place for a calm evening. (And I'm telling you... Look at their cupcakes! Just look at them!) 8/10

Price of the chai: 75 CZK / 3 EUR
