Alba's and Margita's Great Test of Chais, Pt. 11: Café Záhorský

One of the main challenges of our chai-testing? Finding places serving chai which are open even after 6 p.m. Luckily, there are still some left and we can keep reviewing the foamy spiciness and spicy foaminess of our favorite winter hot drink (don't look at me like that, plummy hot-wine from Vinářství Kubík! You made me love you and you disappeared before Christmas. And chai is still here. Chai understands.)

In today's article we will take you back to Bubeneč where we simply had to try the chai of Café Záhorský!

ALBA

The Foam: Incredibly thick layer of consistent foam (and I refer to the pictures to show how unusually thick it really was!). First a bit spicy, more gentle after mixing it with the rest of the chai. 6.5/10

The Chai: Served in a normal cup, this chai was visually quite interesting. The foam layer was so thick we weren't quite sure how to proceed at the beginning. The foam had some syrup on the top and, after mixing it with the dark lower layer of chai, our beverage was ready to be drunk and reviewed: this chai was a bit milky and the spice combo was ok, but I would have enjoyed it more if it had been warmer. (I know I might sound like a temperature freak but I can't really enjoy a milky beverage unless it's properly warm :D.) 6/10

The Overall Experience: This time we headed to Hradčanská, back to a place where we both had a lot of memories together as we used to go to Záhorský for lunch quite often, back in the days of being more than friends (meaning that we were also colleagues :D). I've always liked the nicely decorated interior, especially the wallpaper on the wall in the back. However Záhorský tends to get quite crowded and noisy, so it's sometimes hard to have a quiet conversation. 7/10

MARGITA

The Foam: This chai looked like it was made of foam ONLY! It was definitely something new and not seen before and the part of me loving transparent items was joyfully clapping when seeing this glass showing the various layers of my hot drink. There was some syrup on the top of the chai which looked like caramel (but I think it wasn't) and the foam was very smooth. 9/10

The Chai: Once all the layers were mixed (which was a playful side-activity), a gently tasting, nice-to-drink chai was standing in front of us. The spiciness was significant and lasting. 8/10

The Overall Experience: We used to have lunch in this place, back in the days when our office was in the Hradčanská area and when my work-world was still right due to Alba being my colleague. As a side-note, I just need to recommend the cuisine of this café, as they have a pretty good variety of tasty gluten-free dishes. (I love you, beetroot risotto! You might not be on the menu anymore, but sure as hell you are still in my heart!)

The staff was very attentive and kind. While I was waiting for Alba to arrive (I was five minutes too early there), at least four waiters came to my table to ask about my order. In the end, our dedicated waiter turned out to be one of those really nice people who seem a bit lost. This I found really likeable and human. The place is quite busy in the evenings, but still it somehow manages to secure a pleasant atmosphere. I don't know if it was the funky music or the rosé wine, but I had a lovely evening in this place. I'm curious if they have such a special-effect-chai in some other café. 8.5/10

Price of the chai:  66 CZK /  2.60 EUR
